About this Project

Hi there, my name is David Weir. By day I'm usually designing pretty pixels for Ludomade here in Los Angeles, but in my spare time I enjoy taking photographs.

This project is an attempt to step out of my comfort zone and into a new level of portrait photography: by taking 100 portraits of people I have never met.

I am in no way a professional photographer, but I hope that this project will help develop my photojournalistic skills further and provide some stories into to the life's of these strangers.

Where can I follow the project?

Stranger #16 – Taleisha

After a few weeks off this project due to a busy work schedule and some very wet weather in Melbourne I was glad to get out in the sun and find my next stranger for the series.

I headed down to the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre on this day as there was a number of Expo’s being held. One was the Armageddon Expo which attracted thousands of dressed up members of the public in their favourite Sci-Fi, Anime, Gaming or Movie Star costumes. In between the crowd of Star Wars fans you could also see a mass of parents and their young children as they weaved their prams through to the Pregnancy Babies & Children’s Expo which was being held next door – the kids of course wanted to be in the other expo. Finally at the end of the convention centre was the third major event – the Discover Europe Travel Expo, and this is where I met my Stranger #16 Taleisha.

Taleisha too was in a costume, although unlike the hundreds of other costumes I had just walked past with their vibrant coloured wigs and cardboard weapons, hers was much more sophisticated and perfect for my series. Before approaching her I turned to notice a group photo being organised with all the Star Wars fans on the steps so I quickly ran over to get a shot whilst I was there 🙂 By the time I had taken a few quick shots Taleisha had gone to take a quick break and had sat down on the steps nearby which was the perfect time to approach her and ask for a portrait.

When I asked for her portrait she agreed without hesitation and became more interested in the project the more I told her. It was the middle of the day and the shadows were harsh, but with so many people around it was hard to position her anywhere where there wasnt going to be people in my shot, so we shot it on the steps and I managed to get my close-up shots as well as a full length shot of her in the fantastic dress.

Taleisha was working to promote the European Expo on this particular day (hence the outfit) and was guiding the members of the public who weren’t looking for superman or a new baby crib in the right direction – which might I say was a big task. She also works for Qantas Airlines in the Frequent Flyers team when not dressing up in European attire on weekends – although maybe this could be a new look for Qantas?

I hope you enjoy these photos Taleisha and thank you once again for being apart of the series.
